Fundamental Principles
Seven Principles.
One Movement.
Proclaimed at the 20th International Conference in Vienna, 1965. These principles guide every action of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement worldwide.
Humanity
Born of a desire to assist without discrimination — to prevent and alleviate suffering, protect life and health, and promote mutual understanding and lasting peace.
Impartiality
No discrimination as to nationality, race, religion, class or politics. Guided solely by need, giving priority to the most urgent cases.
Neutrality
The Movement may not take sides in hostilities or engage in controversies of a political, racial, religious or ideological nature.
Independence
National Societies must maintain their autonomy to act in accordance with Movement principles at all times, even as auxiliaries to their governments.
Volunteer Service
A voluntary relief movement not prompted in any manner by desire for gain.
Unity
Only one Red Cross or Red Crescent Society per country — open to all, carrying out humanitarian work throughout its territory.
Universality
The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is worldwide — all Societies have equal status and share equal responsibilities in helping each other.
